Land management plays a crucial role in maintaining a lively outdoor space. One key practice involves periodically cutting down flower bed areas to refresh and revitalize.
If you have been walking around Shrub Hill Common lately, you might have noticed that Dacorum has mowed the Flower Meadow areas.Contacting Dacorum, I received the information that "the cutting of the grass and flower areas is carried out by our grounds maintenance division following a plan that has been agreed by our Trees & Woodlands team and external advisors from Butterfly Conservation, a wildlife charity."
They also said the areas that are cut vary every year, so it can provide a range of plant species of different heights and ages, which creates multiple habitats for insects.
Beyond that, all the cutttings were removed from the site, ensuring there is a loss of nutrients, which is very benefitial for wildflower species.
Further works are planned in agreement with Butterfly Conservation, including the control of low height shrub species that are spreading across the site.
